{"id":3644,"date":"2021-04-08T18:04:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T16:04:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gregoryderville.com\/?p=3644"},"modified":"2025-05-17T13:27:06","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T11:27:06","slug":"archie-shepp-horace-parlan-nobody-knows-the-trouble-ive-seen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregoryderville.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/08\/archie-shepp-horace-parlan-nobody-knows-the-trouble-ive-seen\/","title":{"rendered":"Archie Shepp &amp; Horace Parlan &#8211; \u00ab\u00a0Nobody knows the trouble I&rsquo;ve seen\u00a0\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c0 l&rsquo;origine du blues et du jazz, il y a notamment ce qu&rsquo;on appelait aux USA le \u00ab\u00a0negro spiritual\u00a0\u00bb , un genre de musique vocale souvent impr\u00e9gn\u00e9e d&rsquo;une forte dimension religieuse, invent\u00e9 au XIX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle par les esclaves noirs des plantations des Etats du sud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les spirituals (puisque la formule est aussi utilis\u00e9e pour qualifier un chant qui appartient \u00e0 ce genre musical) expriment une exp\u00e9rience collective, celles d&rsquo;esclaves qui, \u00e0 peine d\u00e9barqu\u00e9s sur le sol am\u00e9ricain, sont coup\u00e9s de leur famille, d\u00e9socialis\u00e9s, \u00e9vang\u00e9lis\u00e9s de force et contraints de travailler jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9puisement, sous les brimades, les humiliations et les coups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La r\u00e9ponse que les esclaves ont invent\u00e9e pour supporter ces conditions de vie inhumaines a \u00e9t\u00e9 de cr\u00e9er de nouvelles formes de sociabilit\u00e9 autour de ce que personne ne pouvait leur voler: la solidarit\u00e9, la fraternit\u00e9, la spiritualit\u00e9, la pri\u00e8re, et la musique chant\u00e9e ensemble dans les champs de coton. C&rsquo;est dans ce creuset que sont n\u00e9s le spiritual, puis le gospel: en d\u00e9pit de leur condition scandaleuse, les esclaves mettent un point d&rsquo;honneur \u00e0 chanter leur foi et leur gratitude pour le cr\u00e9ateur auxquels ils croient, et leur confiance dans le fait que le paradis leur est promis, dans ce monde ou dans le suivant. On y trouve une forte influence du Livre de l&rsquo;Exode, qui raconte l&rsquo;\u00e9mancipation du peuple h\u00e9breu, et qui aide les esclaves \u00e0 esp\u00e9rer se lib\u00e9rer un jour du joug de leurs ma\u00eetres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avec \u00ab\u00a0Swing low, sweet chariot\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0When the saints go marching in\u00a0\u00bb , \u00ab\u00a0Nobody knows the trouble I&rsquo;ve seen\u00a0\u00bb est l&rsquo;un des plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres spirituals, notamment parce qu&rsquo;il a \u00e9t\u00e9 rendu tr\u00e8s populaire par plusieurs versions de Louis Armstrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Archie Shepp et Horace Parlan en proposent une version magnifique et intens\u00e9ment expressive, bien que pleine de retenue, de gravit\u00e9 et de subtilit\u00e9. La ligne m\u00e9lodique du sax soprano d&rsquo;Archie Shepp, d&rsquo;une clart\u00e9 limpide, virevolte avec gr\u00e2ce autour du th\u00e8me. Quant au piano d&rsquo;Horace Parlan, il l&rsquo;explore plus discr\u00e8tement, mais de fa\u00e7on plus aventureuse.
